13th to 16th of April
This April will see the second edition of the Elias Parish-Alvars Harp Festival in Teignmouth, Devon. After a very successfull launch in 2008, which featured an international competition, lectures, and concerts performed by leading soloists of the harp world, the festival returns in 2009 this time in collaboration with the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Haus in Leipzig, Germany.
The festival will take place from the 13th until the 17th of April in Teignmouth, the hometown of legendary harpist Elias Parish Alvars, after whom the festival has been named. This years festival will focus on education, a musical aspect very prominent in the life and dear to Parish Alvars. It will feature masterclasses for harpists given by Florence Sitruk, founder of the EPA festival and professor at the Geneva Haute Ecole de Musique, and Sioned Williams, principal harpist of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Senior Fellow of Harp Studies at the Trinity College of Music, London. In addition to these classes, this year will feature masterclasses by violist Hartmut Rohde who is not only a world class soloist, but also professor for viola at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Once again there will be numerous concerts for the residents of Teignmouth to choose from. Performances will not only feature faculty and guest artists, but also students and the winner of last years competition, Giulia Ott, aged 16. Classes will be held at the Bay Hotel in Teignmouth, which the public is encouraged to attend free of charge. The concerts will again be held at local churches. More detailed information will soon be available and can be found on this website. Please come and join us in the celebration of Teignmouths favorite musical son.
